The native Galloways come from Dumphries in South-Western Scotland. They are an 18th century breed that are traditionally foragers, and live in harsh conditions where food can be scarce and weather extreme.
Although ours are reared in Yorkshire they still exclusively forage and eat no grain. The cows are slow-maturing and are much smaller than our usual Longhorns.
A slower maturing breed, our Galloways are slaughtered at 40 months (whereas our Longhorns are slaughtered at 30). Their steaks are well marbled and have a herby, earthy flavour and a melt-away texture.
